Cutting acquisition spend per dollar lent about 90%, under US lending-ad rules.
MPOWER Financing · 2023 to 2025. ~90% less acquisition spend per dollar lent.
The constraint
MPOWER Financing lends to international students in 50+ countries. US lending-ad rules limit what an ad can say. Buyers are skeptical, and the team was small. In 2023, acquisition spend came to about 10% of loan volume.
What we did
- Moved budget from paid reach to referrals, search, and ambassadors.
- Built a peer network of students and alumni, from 40 to 500+ ambassadors in 39 countries.
- Answered “Is this a scam?” with Trustpilot reviews and live Q&As.
The result
By 2025, acquisition spend was about 1% of loan volume.
What it means for you
When ads are restricted and buyers doubt you, paid reach quickly becomes expensive. In that market, trust built by customers did more per dollar than paid reach.
“Is this a scam?” is a marketing problem.
MPOWER Financing · reviews and live Q&As. 4.8 on Trustpilot, from 4,000+ reviews.
The constraint
An unfamiliar lender offering money to students abroad can look too good to be true, and prospective borrowers said so in those words: “Is this a scam?” More ads would only have repeated the claim they doubted.
What we did
- Launched a Trustpilot program, so students could read borrower experiences before applying.
- Ran live Q&A sessions where prospective borrowers could question the team directly.
The result
Trustpilot reached 4.8 out of 5 from 4,000+ reviews, as of September 2026. Eligible leads who attended a Q&A applied at 21%; those who didn’t, at 14%. The live sessions drew more than 20,000 attendees by 2024.
What it means for you
When buyers doubt you, louder marketing deepens the doubt. Proof from other customers, and a chance to ask a person, can do what an ad can’t.

From 40 ambassadors to 500+ in 39 countries.
MPOWER Financing · 2023 to 2025. 500+ ambassadors, up from 40.
The constraint
Borrowers came from 50+ countries, the marketing team was small, and US lending-ad rules limited what an ad could say. Students also trust other students more than they trust a lender.
What we did
- Built a peer network of students and alumni, so prospective borrowers could hear from someone with a similar experience.
- Fed what the community heard back into the messaging.
- Added creator partnerships where ambassador coverage was thin.
The result
The network grew from 40 ambassadors in 2023 to more than 500 in 2025, across 39 countries.
What it means for you
A small team can be present in many countries when customers carry part of the conversation. The work is in choosing them, equipping them, and listening to what they hear.
1.8× loan volume, on a budget that didn’t grow.
MPOWER Financing · 2022 to 2023. 1.8× loan volume, same budget.
The constraint
The marketing budget stayed flat for the year. The growth target did not.
What we did
- Cut dependence on paid ads.
- Renegotiated partner and vendor terms.
- Moved referral rewards to a later milestone, so rewards followed progress on the loan without making referrers wait months to be paid.
The result
From 2022 to 2023, qualified applications grew 2.3× and loan volume 1.8×, on the same annual budget. The referral change alone saved more than $500,000 in 2023.
What it means for you
A flat budget is a reason to look hard at what each dollar already buys. Terms, timing, and channel mix often hold more than a new campaign.
Back from COVID: three times the leads in six months.
MPOWER Financing · 2021. 3× qualified leads in six months.
The constraint
In 2020, COVID closed borders to the international students MPOWER Financing lends to. When they could travel again in 2021, the runway was short and only one senior marketer was left to plan the comeback.
What we did
- Built a demand forecast first, so the company agreed on what “back” meant before a dollar was spent.
- Rehired an agency the team already trusted, instead of running a long search.
- Relaunched paid media, SEO, and referrals together. Referrals now rewarded both people, and the reward came sooner.
- Wrote one plain, personal email to everyone who had been waiting through COVID.
The result
Within six months, qualified leads were three times their pre-pandemic level. Referrals grew into one of the main ways new customers found MPOWER.
What it means for you
A relaunch is a story your customers already half know. Agree on what success looks like before the money moves, then tell the people who were waiting first, in a person’s voice rather than a press release.
The best audience was hiding inside an average.
MPOWER Financing · Women Who Dream · 2025. 2.4× qualified leads from women.
The constraint
Funnel data showed women converted better than men at every stage, from first visit to funded loan. The marketing still spoke to “students” as if they were one group.
What we did
- Turned the analysis into a campaign, Women Who Dream, for women planning to study abroad.
- Built its stories and messages for them, opening with a film for International Women’s Day.
- Later reused the idea to reach nursing students, as part of a wider push to diversify where customers came from.
The result
In 2025, qualified leads from women grew 2.4×, and loan volume from women grew 2.2×.
What it means for you
Split your conversion rates by segment before you split the budget. Your best customers may be sitting quietly inside an average.

Opening Nepal with two words: no collateral.
MPOWER Financing · 2025 to 2026. 4× site traffic from a new market.
The constraint
In Nepal, borrowing to study abroad usually starts with the family land, because banks want property as collateral. MPOWER lends on a student’s admission and future earnings instead. It was the right offer, from a lender few families there knew. A lender from Washington promising loans without collateral sounded too good to be true.
What we did
- Built the whole launch around bina dhito, Nepali for “without collateral,” the words families already use. Every headline, video title, and invitation led with them.
- Hired a local agency and an in-country market lead, so the launch spoke to families in their language and on their terms.
- Answered the questions families ask on Nepali TV and radio, in person: what happens if I can’t pay, and why lend without property?
- Co-hosted an education and careers summit in Kathmandu as the first event in the market.
The result
Within a day of the November 2025 announcement, Nepali news sites carried it. By February 2026, site traffic from Nepal was four times the year before. The summit in March 2026 drew 1,500 qualified prospects and turned away 1,500 more.
What it means for you
Find the words your customers already use for what they want, and put them everywhere. Where nobody knows you yet, a person they can question, on channels their parents trust, does more than any ad.

A career program that opened a market of students already in the US.
MPOWER Financing · Career Accelerator. Enrolled students, a faster-converting market.
The constraint
New students applying from abroad faced a long, uncertain visa process before they could enroll, so many applications stalled. At the same time, students already enrolled in the US were running short. When their home currency fell, the money from their original lender no longer covered the rest of their degree, and they came to MPOWER midyear for more.
What we did
- Shifted targeting toward students already enrolled in the US, who could borrow without waiting on a visa.
- Built the Career Accelerator around what those students wanted most: a job after graduation.
- Opened it to borrowers at every stage, and gave universities and partners a reason to recommend MPOWER.
The result
Enrolled students converted at a higher rate than students applying from abroad. The Career Accelerator became a major selling point with universities and partners, and a permanent benefit for MPOWER borrowers.
What it means for you
The best new market can be people you already reach, held back by a different problem. Find what they want next, and build the offer around it.

$76,000 in B2B sales over a solar launch’s first three months.
Solar launch · led by one of our founders, before Rarecraft. $76K in B2B sales over three months.
The constraint
Most of Papua New Guinea has no grid power, so demand for solar is high, but the country is remote, forested, and thinly populated. The local retail partner had a lean team and no system for new demand. Internet use is low, yet mobile carriers give free data for Meta’s apps, so for many people Facebook is the internet.
What we did
- Kept the whole journey inside Meta, with lead forms that never sent anyone to a website.
- Shot local creative on location, so the offer looked like it belonged there.
- Routed every lead into a new CRM, then recruited and trained two local sales contractors, paid on commission tied to each product’s economics.
- Set a 48-hour limit for following up on every lead.
The result
A $400 media test in the first week brought in 138 qualified retail leads. Over three months, the wider program produced $76,000 in B2B sales.
What it means for you
Enter a new market through the door people already use, not the one you’re used to. Then make sure a person answers fast: a lead nobody calls back is only a cost.
